4 Unique Self-Care Tips To Rock. Your. World.
Our favorite wacky wellness trends and why they really work.
It’s almost 2020, and the self-care world has gotten creative. From Reiki to oil pulling to activated charcoal, people across the world are treating their overactive lifestyles with alternative healing methods—seeking new and interesting ways to wind down, get healthy, and feel amazing. Even if that includes swishing coconut oil in your mouth for twenty minutes.
But with the abundance of new products and practices flooding the wellness market, it can be tricky to determine what really works from what may just be a passing trend. Below, find some game-changing, outside-the-box wellness hacks for your body and your mind.
Can you smell your way to wellness? From frankincense to peppermint, essential oils have exploded across the wellness market as an effective and gentle way to release stress, focus, fall asleep, energize, aid digestion, or boost libido, depending on which oil you use. Oils can be rubbed on skin, ingested in tea or water and, most popularly, sniffed! Experts recommend pouring a few drops of your favorite oil in your palms, rubbing them together to warm up the oil for maximum scent power, and taking a big whiff. Just make sure the oils are safe for use on the skin. If not, mix them with a base oil like coconut oil or olive oil before use.
Would you sit in a -300° chamber if it meant better skin, weight loss, enhanced mood and reduced inflammation? Some of the world’s top athletes would. Cryotherapy has become a major trend in the wellness space, and its benefits are backed by science. The idea is this: if you put your body in below-freezing temperatures, it activates your self-repair mechanisms, bringing fresh blood to the areas where it’s needed most. Pretty cool, huh? 🥶😉
So just…breathing? Yes and no. Breathwork refers to a specific rhythm of inhaling and exhaling that, when repeated, produces quite an interesting effect. It’s best done lying down, in a group, and under the guidance of a group leader. You’ll understand why in a minute.
It works like this:
Step 1: Breathe into your stomach through your mouth. You should see your belly rise as you do this.
Step 2: Use the rest of your inhale to breathe into your chest. You should see your chest rise as you do this.
Step 3: Exhale through your mouth.
That’s it! So what happens? Attend a Breathwork class in your city’s hippest yoga studio, and after a few minutes, you’ll see people weeping, laughing, and shouting (or all three, which can be fascinating to watch). Breathwork is said to be a fast, healthy way to release fear, tension and other pent-up emotions. The benefit? Aside from the emotional release, people report feeling lighter, more focused, and more connected the next day.
One last note: don’t be alarmed if your hands clench up mid-practice. This is what’s known as “Lobster Claw” in Breathwork circles, and “tetany” in medical circles, and it’s a result of there being temporarily less carbon dioxide in the blood. “The claw” will subside a few minutes after you’re done breathing, and is not dangerous.
