Liquid I.V.’s investment will continue DigDeep’s Appalachia Water Project to give 150 families in McDowell County, West Virginia access to clean water
El Segundo, Calif., December 14, 2021 – Liquid I.V., a leading company in functional hydration, is partnering with non-profit DigDeep and its Appalachia Water Project to bring clean, running water to 150 families in McDowell County in West Virginia, marking the first time in decades most of these families have had reliable access to running water.
In America, there are 2.2 million people who still don’t have running water or a toilet at home, with families in Central Appalachia being some of the hardest hit. To access clean water, residents of McDowell County drive long distances for bottled water or get sick hauling it from mine shafts and springs. The community is faced with failing 100-year-old water pipes, contamination from nearby mines, and a weak local economy.
Through the Appalachia Water Project, DigDeep is helping solve these issues with the support of partners such as Liquid I.V., a mission-driven company with a history of investing in solutions that provide water access to underserved communities. Liquid I.V.’s significant financial investment, the largest to-date in its history of mission-related donations, will allow DigDeep to complete its 2021 goal of securing piped connections for 150 families in McDowell County by the end of the year. Currently, DigDeep provides financial and construction assistance to individual homeowners seeking to get connected to new water mains constructed by McDowell County Public Service District as part of its multi-million-dollar Elkhorn Creek Phase II water system upgrades.
“Having access to clean water is a fundamental need for every person on the planet; the moment we heard about the water crisis in McDowell County, we wanted to help,” said Sean Lavin, Vice President of Mission, Liquid I.V. “Already burdened with one of highest poverty and unemployment rates in the country, we are honored to partner with DigDeep to help connect families in West Virginia to water access and look forward to helping impact other communities across the United States.”
“With the help of residents, local government, and water utilities, we are successfully bringing clean, running water to hundreds of families within these communities,” said George McGraw, CEO of DigDeep. “Liquid I.V.’s investment will help further our impact in West Virginia, with capacity-building in mind, and is helping us in our mission to bring clean, running water to every American.”
Through these piped connections and piloting off-grid systems, DigDeep is working to ensure that all families, regardless of income level or geography, can gain reliable access to clean drinking water. Not only will this ease the extreme measures these families have taken to acquire clean water, but it will also help prevent health issues exacerbated by unsafe water. Access to clean water in homes will be life-changing for children, giving them the confidence to go to school, participate in sports and other skill-building activities without social anxiety caused by a lack of clean clothing or the ability to bathe regularly.
"We're moving as quickly as we can to get families connected to the new water main for the holidays. It's all hands-on deck right now,” said Bob McKinney, Manager of DigDeep’s Appalachia Water Project. “This additional funding from Liquid I.V. will be instrumental in helping us complete our goal and beyond in 2022."
